Not all mental health advice comes from a textbook. Sometimes it comes from the people who have lived it.
Dave and Luke sit down with psychiatrist Dr. Ken Duckworth, former chief medical officer at NAMI and author of You Are Not Alone. Drawing on the experiences of more than 130 people living with mental health conditions and their families, Dr. Duckworth shares the lessons that decades of medical training couldn’t teach him.
From the power of peer support to the importance of everyday routines, relationships, and radical acceptance, Dr. Duckworth explores what people with lived experience can teach us about mental fitness. He shares stories of people finding purpose through helping others, families learning when to let go, and individuals discovering practical ways to navigate mental health challenges.
The conversation also explores the realities of serious mental illness, the importance of connection, and what mental health prevention can look like in everyday life. Dr. Duckworth reflects on the lessons he’s learned from his grandson and why showing up for the people we love may be one of the most meaningful things we can do.
Whether you’re navigating your own mental health challenges, supporting someone you love, or simply looking to build stronger mental fitness habits, this episode is a reminder that some of the most powerful tools for well-being are also the simplest.
